About Us

Cheshire Lions with assembled Thanksgiving food baskets
Cheshire Lions with assembled Thanksgiving food baskets.

Cheshire Lions have been serving our town and the world since 1949. Our current membership includes Cheshire residents, yes. But some of us live in other towns too. Some of us joined because of mutual friends. Others have business interests here. Still others like our activities and fellowship. So you don’t have to be a resident to join us. Cheshire Lions Club is one of the most active in Connecticut.

Here are some examples of our service:

  • Annual town Easter egg hunt, since 1952. Free to children and families from Cheshire and surrounding towns. Offered in cooperation with the Parks Department.
  • Annual Dance for the Blind, since 1958. Blind and sight-impaired individuals and couples are invited for a dinner dance. Cheshire Lions provide the venue, food, music and transportation.
  • Annual Trunk or Treat event. Free to children and families from Cheshire and surrounding towns. Offered in cooperation with the Parks Department.
  • Annual eye screenings for 1,650 + children in Cheshire schools. (150 referred to doctors.)
  • Supporting eye research at Yale University and University of Connecticut and throughout the state. Cheshire Lions are one of many Lions Clubs supporting more than $10 million in research grants.
  • Support of the statewide KidSight eye screening program.
  • Collecting used eyeglasses for the Lions sight-saver program.
  • Aid to low vision legally blind citizens.
  • Annual Peace Poster contest for students of Dodd Middle School.

Fundraising Events

Cheshire Lions Club members support our efforts with their own generous contributions. We also offer events where we provide a community service in exchange for donations.

One of our largest fundraisers is the annual Ion Bank Cheshire Road Races. This popular annual event includes a half-marathon, 5K race and kid’s fun run. Our members volunteer their time to ensure a fun and safe race.

We also offer annual events like the Mother’s Day plant sale and a paper shredding event. Other social events include wine tastings, comedy shows and more.

Worldwide Efforts

Cheshire Lions are part of Lions Clubs International. It is the world’s largest service organization.  We are among 1.4 million members in 219 countries. That’s more countries than in the United Nations. In fact, Lions Club was a U.N. founding member. It holds a seat as a non-political group.

Global causes: diabetes, vision, hunger, environment and childhood cancer. Lions are also at the forefront of humanitarian aid and disaster relief.

Mission: to empower Lions clubs, volunteers, and partners to improve health and well-being, strengthen communities, and support those in need through humanitarian services and grants that impact lives globally, and encourage peace and international understanding.

Vision: To be the global leader in community and humanitarian service.

Cheshire Lions Club supports these causes through our local projects. We also provide financial support to Lions International and Connecticut state foundations.

Join Us!

You are welcome to join us formally or informally. You can volunteer at one or many of our many events with no obligation. If you wish to join the club, dues are reasonable, meetings are monthly except in the summer and opportunities are everywhere!

We are a fun and welcoming group. We come from a range of ages, backgrounds, experiences and Connecticut towns. (You don’t need to be a Cheshire resident to join us.)

It is very fulfilling to work with like minded members serving those in need.
